When is the best time of year to cut bushes back hard and trim trees? The best time of year to cut most plants substantially back from its current state (more than a trim, the act of cutting the bush back to a smaller bush) is in the winter. Cutting a plant back in the summer has the potential to create a lasting impact on the longevity of the plant and its ability to survive the following winter. Why? Think of a plant similar to a hibernating animal. The spring and summer are the times the plant will grow and pull in as much nutrients to the root system to be able to survive the winter. Cutting the plant back hard in the summer can impact its ability to collect nutrients in order to "hibernate" and survive during the harsh winter months. If you cut the plant back in the winter, the plant has already hibernated and has all of the nutrients it needs to survive and rebloom in the spring and summer.
